Benefits of ajwain during and after pregnancy

Asian countries are known for their use of wide variety of spices. There is a whole lot of list of spices which not only bring flavor to the food, but are also known for their medicinal properties.

One of those spices is carom seeds, also known as Bishop’s weed, Thymol seeds or Ajwain in Hindi, Vamu in Telugu, Omam in Tamil, Ayamodakam in Malayalam, Om Kalugalu in Kannada, Ajmo in Gujarati and Ova in Marathi. They belong to the same family as fennel, anise, dill, and caraway

Ayurveda acknowledges the benefits of all such spices and encourages its use in our day to day life. One of such spice is Carom seeds or ajwain.  According to Ayurveda, ajwain is a powerful cleanser. It is helpful for stimulating the appetite and enhancing digestion. It is recommended to help alleviate gas and discomfort in the stomach. It is also helpful for the functioning of the respiratory system and the kidneys.

Benefits of Ajwain

  1. Stomach disorder due to overeating can be treated with ajwain as it acts like as a panacea for such problems.
  2. Ajwain water is good to treat gas, gastritis and acidity.
  3. Ajwain water is good in curing and treating of indigestion.

After Delivery, the mothers’ immune system needs a boost and hence use of Ajwain on a daily basis is recommended.

Therapeutically, instead of using the seeds directly its properties can be infused in water for easier consumption.

Health benefits of Ajwain water for postpartum mothers

Ajwain water is very useful for medicinal purposes. Ajwain water is an effective Ayurvedic marvel against many diseases and disorders. If the mother needs instant relief against gastritis, constipation, stomach ache, indigestion, heaviness in the stomach, etc., ajwain water is recommended as one of the best home remedies. Ajwain water is given to small babies too who are having colic and gas related problems. The problem of indigestion is common even with pregnant ladies; hence ajwain water is also recommended to them. It is beneficial before and after delivery both. It is also useful in cleansing of stomach and uterus. Drinking of Ajwain water is also suggested for irregular period.

Preparation of ajwain water?

It is very simple and easy.

Ajwain (2 tsp)

Water 200 ml.

  • Initially, roast the ajwain on a low flame until its fragrance starts to come.
  • Put is in water and bring the water to boil till it becomes brown colored.
  • Let that water come to room temperature.
  • Strain it before using.

It is now ready to give it to those suffering from indigestion, flatulence or may be given to even small children above 6 months.

How to use Ajwain water to cure stomach gas or bloating and cold/cough

  • Make a mixture of 1 glass water with 1 tsp of ajwain seed powder, 1 tsp dried ginger powder and little black salt. Drinking this Ajwain mixture helps to treat stomach gas and gastritis.
  • Ajwain water mixed with a pinch of black salt in it also helps to relive stomach gas.
  • Simply drinking ajwain water on a regular basis also helps in preventing gas problems and bloating.
  • Drinking plain ajwain water or ajwain water with other components by breastfeeding mothers on a daily basis is believed to help reduce colic and gastric problems in breastfed babies.
  • Drinking ajwain water gives warmth to the body hence helps the postpartum mothers fight cold and cough.

Using Ajwain water is good for infants

Ajwain water can even be given to infants and babies to treat colic and gas related problems.

Half spoon freshly prepared ajwain water may be given to the babies to reduce the gas and colic problems in babies and thereby reducing frequent crying.

The combination of ajwain seeds, fennel seeds and water may also be given to the infants to minimize their colic problems.

Using Ajwain water to help relieve constipation after delivery

Ajwain is one of the important kitchen ingredients that is full of health and medicinal benefits. Women, especially keep ajwain in their kitchen as home remedies for many diseases and conditions like constipation, indigestion, gas, acidity, stomach pain, etc.  Ajwain has inherent Ayurvedic properties to digest foods thus good for digestion.  Consuming a spoonful mix of ajwain seed powder, dried ginger powder and black salt helps in easing constipation.

The presence of thymol in carom seeds smooth the secretion of gastric juices and improves digestion thus ensuring relief in constipation.  Drinking lukewarm ajwain water on a daily basis is good in treating constipation.

Using Ajwain water for weight loss

Not many people know that Ajwain water is also good to lose weight. Mothers who are looking for postpartum weight loss after 6 months of delivery can make use of it. It enhances the rate of metabolism, which results in burning of fat thereby helps in losing of weight.

How to make ajwain water for weight loss

  • Put 25 grams of ajwain seeds soaked into one glass of water overnight.
  • Mix it and strained it in the morning.
  • Add a tsp of honey to the mixture and drink it.
  • Continue it for 15-20 days to get the benefits of weight loss.

Tip:

Chewing of carom seeds in the morning before breakfast is also beneficial aspects of ajwain to lose weight.
